Abstract: Your readers may be interested to know some of the results of a recent survey of farm production and management involving 308 high country farmers of the South Island. Briefly, the survey was the fourth in a series started in 1965/ 66 by the Tussock Grasslands and Mountain Lands Institute (now incorporated in the Centre for Resource Management) and repeated at approximately five-yearly intervals since. While the objective of the surveys was to monitor changes in pastoral production and management, each survey sought supplementary information relevant to the time of each survey. The most recent of the series (in 1981/82) sought responses to a number of questions of general interest and concern such as: sources of finance, land tenure, research needs, animal diseases, subdivision, sources of information, etc. The survey questionnaire was fully completed by 250 runholders. The results of this and a summary of earlier surveys are published in detail..
