Abstract: The oxide and sulphate of zinc have been employed extensively for the prevention of facial eczema, and both are acceptable compounds as supplelments to the diet in the treatment of zinc deficiency in man and domestic animals. The concentration of zinc in pasture and the sera of dairy cows was measured routinely to make an assessment of mineral nutrition. Samples of pasture were collected from each soil type on a property. Soil types encountered were from peats, aluminium from the Taupo zone and various ash showers (Hamilton Mairoa Tirau-Waihi). Bloods were collected for sera, into clear vacutainers and a single determination for zinc were made on pooled sera from ten cows within each herd. Serum zinc concentrations were obtained on diluted sera (15 with distilled water) using atomic absorption spectroscopy
