Abstract: Faecal samples submitted by veterinarians to the Ruakura Animal Health Laboratory from young calves with diarrhoea are subjected to bacteriological and virological examinations. Known infectious agents causing neonatal diarrhoea, eg. E. Coli, rotavirus, and coronavirus are frequently isolated. More recently samples have been examined for cryptosporidium oocysts. From July till December 1984,1985 and 1986, faecal samples from scouring calves were examined and their ages recorded. Faecal smears were stained by a modified Ziehl-Nielsen technique, which readily identified the cryptosporidium oocysts as spherical, red, dense bodies (4.0 to 5.0 µm) containing an eccentrically placed black dot.
