Abstract: We wish to propose a new quarantine concept aimed at facititating a wider and safer introduction of fertiliscd livestock embryos into New Zealand. The transferred quarantine (TQ) concept involves the elimination of the quarantine of recipients in New Zealand with the effective transfer of the protective step back to the country of origin. The adoption of the measures described will mean the range of countries able to export embryos to New Zealand will be increased, the associated costs greatly decreased, and a lesser risk posed to the domestic livestock industries. It is now widely accepted that the importation of appropriately collected, washed and stored embryos is far safer than the importation of live animals. We believe that technology has advanced to the point where it is no longer tenable or necessary to accept the risks associated with maximum security quarantine in New Zealand
