Abstract: Since 1985 New Zealand exporters have entered the live sheep trade to the Middle East and other parts of the world. The trade is opposed by animal welfare organizations with good reasons, and requires careful quality management and good economic returns to continue. Although other countries including Australia have been involved in the trade for much longer periods and many veterinary investigations have been conducted on board ships carying live sheep very few reports were present in the scientific literature until recently. An extensive compilation of Australian experience was published in 1988 and three comprehensive studies on shipments from Western Australia in 1989. A collection of research and management priorities is presented in Australian Advances in Veterinary Science 1989. There are some differences between the published Australian findings and data gathered on voyages of New Zealand
